OGUN ROLLS OUT ANNUAL OPERATIONAL PLAN FOR HEALTH SECTOR

By Our Reporter

Ogun State Government has developed a holistic Health Annual Operational Plan (AOP) for the year 2023 with a firm call on all stakeholders to work towards implementing the stated goals in the document.

The AOP is an important tool for translating government intentions and policies into tangible actions as well as defining the road map with timelines to reaching the desired destination.

Speaking at the disseminating meeting and formal launch of the AOP in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, said the 2023 document was technically worked upon with input from development partners and validated to ensure the gaps in the health needs of Ogun residents are well addressed.

Coker said that the annual plan, which is the third in the series, would lead to scaling-up effective service coverage, coordinating support for health and increasing domestic health financing.

She, therefore urged the programme directors, coordinators, monitoring and evaluation(M & E) officers to do their best in ensuring the state achieved up to 75% implementation status in the 2023 AOP, adding that the material should be put to use and not left to gather dust on the shelves.

Coker advised programme directors and managers to raise memo ahead of time to request for fund for any forthcoming project without delay, describing the annual operational plan as an examination which the stakeholders set for themselves during the five-day thorough brainstorming sessions away from distraction a few weeks ago in Ijebu-Ode.

The Commissioner, who also presented laptops and flash drives to the Medical Officers of Health as well as Monitoring and Evaluation officers across the 20 local government areas of the state, noted that gadgets would enhance the quality of data in the state.

Coker said that the government has put all modalities in place to introduce Electronic Medical Records ( EMR) to replace the manual system in line with 21st century practice.

“This document should not sit on the shelves but it should be a dynamic one that we refer to at every point in time. It is our implementing tool for translating government policies into tangible actions.

” It is, therefore, important for us to be proactive because we must not be found wanting in the examination we set for ourselves. We have to work assiduously to implement the expectations for 2023 for the benefits of the entire residents of Ogun State as far as the health sector is concerned, ” she said.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kayode Oladehinde, described the 2023 AOP as an improvement on th past two editions, just as he called for all hands to be on deck to ensure the success of the set goals.

In his remarks, the Director of Health, Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Kayode Kusimo thanked the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Coker, for her sterling leadership which has resulted in the state’s annual plan for three consecutive years.

Kusimo also appreciated the development partners for their support, assuring that the next year’s plan will have a resounding implementation status.

Bayraktar said that year 2022 which marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Nigeria had indeed gained a huge momentum recently with the reciprocal high-level visits of President Erdogan in October, 2021 and President Buhari, in December 2021.

“With its steady growth over the last decade and by emerging as an economic powerhouse in its region, Türkiye expressed its readiness to share its development experience with African States to broaden and strengthen its cooperation in different areas.

“Today, Turkish business people, some of whom are present here are investing in numerous sectors: from Fast-Moving-Consumer goods to construction, from healthcare to transportation, from energy to agriculture.

“With the current pace of increasing commercial relations, I am confident that we will soon achieve our target of $5 billion of bilateral trading volume with Nigeria, which remains as one of our top trading partners in sub-Saharan Africa.”

BIDEN, SUNAK PROMISE TO SUPPORT TO UKRAINE

By Stephanie Henry

BIDEN with Sunak

United States President, Joe Biden and Britain’s new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak have agreed in talks Tuesday to work together to support Ukraine and stand up to China, the White House said.

They spoke for the first time hours after Sunak became Britain’s UK, inheriting an economic crisis following the resignation of Liz Truss after a mere 45-day tenure.

The two leaders also reaffirmed the special relationship that exists between the United States and Britain, and said they would work together to advance global security and prosperity, the White House said in a read-out of the conversation.

“The leaders agreed on the importance of working together to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its aggression,” the statement said of the war triggered by the Russian invasion of its pro-Western neighbor in February.

The White House said Biden and Sunak also agreed to “address the challenges posed by China,” which Washington has identified as its top geopolitical and economic rival on the world stage today.

Downing St had earlier released its own read-out of the call in which it said the pair “discussed the extent of UK-US cooperation, both bilaterally and in regions such as the Indo-Pacific,” as well as the more contentious issue of Northern Ireland.

China’s foreign office spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday that Washington must abandon its “zero-sum thinking” on Beijing.

“China is a partner and a (source of) opportunity for the development of all countries, not a challenge and a threat,” Wang said at a daily press briefing.

“Instead of spreading its outdated ‘China threat theory’ and piecing together a small clique with no future, it should try to establish a new mindset of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, and do more to promote world peace and development.”

Earlier on Tuesday Biden had congratulated Sunak in a tweet.

Biden described the naming of Britain’s first non-white prime minister as “pretty astounding, a groundbreaking milestone.”

Britain has been a key European ally of the United States in arming and supporting the Ukrainian military as it tries to repel the Russian invasion which began in February.

THE LINEAGE OF KINGSHIP OF OLOWU OWU

Oba Saka Adeola Matemilola

By Bisade Ojoye

he lineages of the kingship can be traced back to the  first Olowu of Owu, son of Oduduwa’s daughter.

Every Olowu that ruled the  Owu Kingdom were princes selected from six ruling houses namely Amororo, Otileta, Ayoloye, Akinjobi, Akinoso and Lagbedu. The Oba will be assisted by his appointed chiefs known as Ogbonis and Ologuns.

Other past Olowu who ruled the kingdom of Owu from the genesis before Oba Saka Matemilola include:

  1. Oba Pawu 1855-1867
    (OTILETA Family)
  2. Oba Adefowote
    1867-1872 (OTILETA
    Family)
  3. Oba Aderinmoye
    1873-1890
    (OTILETA Family)
  4. Oba Adepegba
    1893-1905
    (AYOLOYE Family)
  5. Oba Owokokade
    1906-1918
    (OTILETA Family)
  6. Oba Dosunmu
    1918-1924
    (AMORORO Family)
  7. Oba Adesin
    1924-1936
    (OTILETA Family)
  8. Oba Adelani
    Gbogboade 1938-1946
    (OTILETA Family)
  9. Oba Salami Gbadela
    Ajibola 1949-1972
    (AYOLOYE Family)
  10. Oba Adebowale
    Oyegbade 1975-1980
    (AKINJOBI Family)
  11. OBA Michael
    Oyelekan April 29th,
    1987 -May 8th, 1987
    (AKINOSO Family)
  12. Oba Olawale Adisa
    Odeleye 1993-2003
    (LAGBEDU Family)
  13. Oba Adegboyega
    Dosunmu Amororo II
    From 2005-2021.

Historically, the history of Owu kingdom is gloomy and there have been several conspiracy theories that surround her history. Based on the oral sources, the founding of Owu Ipole which was formerly known as  Orile-Owu was shortly after the settlement of Oduduwa in Ile – Ife.  Like  they said Owu was the first to be founded after Ile – Ife. Going by oral tradition, it is believed that the Owu occupied an area directly along and below Niger River in the present country of Nigeria. Orile-Owu later expanded and became a very popular and powerful Yoruba settlement, which eventually attained the status of a kingdom of great repute. It became a force to be reckoned with within Yoruba land, particularly between the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

During the second half of the 19th century, Orile-Owu began to decline due to hunger, persistence war and insecurity over their lives  and properties resulting from slave raiding. Therefore, they had to evacuate the territory in  search of a secure place in order to ensure their survival. The Owus moved out of their settlement  and escaped southwest in groups for safety in the face of heavy external aggression (Chief Olalere per comm., 2011).Their initial settlement was destroyed as a result of the late 19th century intra-sub-ethnic wars.

This caused a lot of damage to the people and in response to the threat, the Owus had to move out of the territory to take refuge in neighboring kingdoms, which is why there is wide dispersal of the Owus all over the country. Owu settlements can be found today  mostly in Yoruba communities like Abeokuta, Lagos, Igbomina land in Kwara State. Based on the account given by Ogundele and Babalola, 2007:60; Ogundele and Ebonine: 2010, the fall of Old Oyo empire in the early 19th century, coupled with the final invasion of Orile-Owu in 1825 was pertinent to the demographic changes in southern Yoruba land.

After moving out of their former territory for a new settlement which is Ibadan,, the rulers of Ibadan, upon hearing the impending Owus attack on their territory, they immediately send  diplomatic emissaries to them.  On the contrary, unlike earlier settlements, the Owus did not stage any war or violence attempt against the army of Ibadan,  instead they peacefully moved into the town, this was unlike their initial territory where they made use of force and war.  As a response towards their peaceful gesture, the monarchs of Ibadan provided them territory to settle (Ita Lisa to Owu Ipole near Ikire).

Going forward, they also settled in Abeokuta among the people of  Egba. The Owus people had engaged in several wars (Owu war) and won battles. They moved from territory to territories, which is why today they can be found in  the Niger River, Lagos State, Epe, etc. Moreover, they can not be classified neither as Ijebus or Egbas.
