ARSENAL CLIMB OVER MAN U INTO FOURTH ON EPL TABLE

By William Adeyemi

Arsenal moved back into fourth place in the Premier League with an emphatic 2-0 win against Leicester, thanks to goals from Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette.

The Gunners were charged with matching Manchester United’s result on Saturday, as the Red Devils defeated Tottenham at Old Trafford, and were rarely challenged by a Leicester team that has struggled all season. Partey’s near-post header from a Gabriel Martinelli corner put the Gunners in front after only 11 minutes.

While Harvey Barnes put goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to the test twice, it was no surprise when Arsenal extended their lead in the second half from the penalty spot.

After referee Anthony Taylor checked the VAR monitor for a Caglar Soyuncu handball that stopped Partey from heading into an open goal,

Lacazette stepped up to convert. Lacazette obliged when the official pointed to the spot.

ABIODUN PROMISES ATAN-LUSADA-AGBARA INDUSTRIAL ROAD WILL BE READY IN SEPTEMBER

By Olufemilade Oyinade

Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, has disclosed that the ongoing construction of the 19- kilometre Atan- Lusada-Agbara road in Ado-Odo/ Ota Local Government Area of the state would be ready for commissioning in September.

Abiodun gave this disclosure on Sunday after inspecting the level of work done on the industrial road.

He noted that the contractors handling the project had divided it into three sections: O-6, 6-11 and 11-19 for ease of execution of the road.

The governor, who expressed delight with the quality of work done so far, added that the contractors had agreed to add one more gang to the existing one to expedite the progress of job.

According to him, “one lane of the road is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of this year, while the whole road project would be completed by September, 2022”.

While stressing the importance of the road, Abiodun said the road which was in a very bad shape for a long time, would be provided with fire station and a ambulance to take care of emergencies ranging from accidents and other unfortunate incidents, when completed.

“This very road is what earned us the industrial capital of this country. Before now, the condition of this road was nothing to write home about. It was in a total and complete disrepair, rendering a lot of business moribund. Companies were closing shops and going somewhere else. Some even left the country, hence we thought this was not good enough.

“I made a presentation to President Muhammadu Buhari to take over the road because it is a road of economic importance and we can not claim to live up to our responsibility without taking up the repairs of the road.

“Apart from leading to the industrial hub of the state, the road also serves as a link to Lagos, neighbouring states and some states in the north, so, it became imperative for us to put the road in good condition”, he stated.

Abiodun, however, said a team to be headed by his deputy, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele would be set up to look into the Adesola Market as well as the abandoned fly over in the axis, reiterating that his administration would complete projects that have direct bearing on the lives of the people.

He further stated that his administration had awarded the construction of Ilisan-Ago-Iwoye and Ilaro-Owode roads, while talks were ongoing with the Dangote Group to construct the Papalanto-Ilaro road.

The governor also restated the commitment of his administration to complete the Agro Cargo Airport at Ilishan-Remo, which according to him is expected to be completed on December this year.

Earlier in his remarks, the Olodan of Odan, Oba Teslim Nosiru, said the road was very important as it served not only the companies operating in the area but also the residents.

He pleaded with the state government not to forget provision of modern fire station to respond to emergency situations, after the completion of the road.

OGUN EMBARKS ON DEMOLITION OF ROADSIDE SHANTIES

Dapo Abiodun inspecting some projects

By Our Reporter

As part of efforts to curtail environmental abuse of the roadsides and forestall incessant accidents, Ogun State Government has begun demolition of shanties and banned indiscriminate parking of trucks at the interchange area of the Lagos-Sagamu expressway.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Hon. Farouk Akintunde and his team, led an enforcement exercise to the Sagamu interchange axis with the collaboration of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), saying it was aimed at sensitising the people.

Akintunde stated that the reason for the demolition was necessitated by the nonchalant attitude of traders, who had been served an abatement notice to vacate the place. He pointed out that the area had been defaced by shanties and illegal truck parking, thereby constituting security threats and filthiness to the environment.

The Senior Special Assistant noted that Environmental Marshals had been designated to monitor the interchange axis to ensure full compliance with the directives, adding that TRACE officers would also be on standby to tow any truck parked illegally on the expressway.

Akintunde said violators of Environmental laws at the Remo Secondary School, Sagamu entrance who had been earlier served abatement notice for defacing State-owned schools which led to the sealed up of the area by the Ministry had been arrested for reopening their shops and would be sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to others.

He appealed to traders and motorists not to return to the evacuated areas to avoid future embarrassment, stressing that government is not comfortable with the environmental abuse of the roadsides.

Meanwhile, traders in the State have been warned to desist from illegal trading on walkways, drainages, roadsides, and under bridges to maintain a healthy environment that would be conducive for the economic growth and wellbeing of the people.

Hon. Akintunde made this known during an enforcement tour in Abeokuta and its environs, noting that trading in illegal places poses grave insecurities to pedestrians, traders, and motorists, saying the present administration is not interested in creating hardship for its citizen, but advocating for compliance with the environmental sanitation law. He enjoined traders to cooperate with the State government at ensuring a healthier, cleaner, and investor-attracting environment.

Akintunde admonished traders selling on walkways, roadsides, and under the bridge to move to State-owned approved markets to engage in legalised trading activities, saying “artisans such as vulcanisers are also banned from encroaching on walkways, they should display their working equipment behind walkways”.

BREAKING! UK SANCTIONS ROMAN ABRAMOVICH, SEVEN OTHER RUSSIANSOLIGARCHS

Roman Abramovich

By Bisade Ojoye

Chelsea Football Club owner, Roman Abramovich was on Thursday hit with an assets freeze and travel ban as part of new UK government sanctions targeting seven Russian oligarchs.

Among others sanctioned are leading industrialist Oleg Deripaska, Rosneft chief executive Igor Sechin and the head of Gazprom Alexei Miller, the government announced.

Speculation has swirled for weeks about whether Abramovich would be included on the targeted action against Russian billionaires perceived to be close to the Kremlin.

Abramovich announced last week that he was selling Chelsea, the English Premier League side he bought in 2003, and bankrolled its successes at domestic and European level.

The UK government estimated his net worth at £9.4 billion (11.1 billion euros, $12.2 billion), but said it was mitigating the effect of the sanctions on Chelsea by allowing the club to continue to operate.

A special licence “authorises a number of football-related activities”, the government said in a statement. This according a report includes permissions for the club to continue playing matches and other football-related activities which will in turn protect the Premier League and loyal fans and other clubs.

Deripaska is Abramovich’s one-time business partner, while officials described Sechin as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “right-hand man”.

The four others; Miller, VTB bank chairman Andrey Kostin, Transneft president Nikolai Tokarev and Bank Rossiya chairman Dmitri Lebedev are part of his inner circle,

An impeccable report has it that collectively, the seven have a net worth of about £15 billion.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the sanctions “the latest step in the UK’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people”.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss added stressed, “Today’s sanctions show once again that oligarchs and kleptocrats have no place in our economy or society.

“With their close links to Putin they are complicit in his aggression. The blood of the Ukrainian people is on their hands. They should hang their heads in shame”
